Latest IEA World Energy Outlook Confirms Need for Increased Use of Biofuels in Global Transport

(TORONTO) Today, Bliss Baker, the President of the Global Renewable Fuels Alliance (GRFA), responded to the IEA’s latest World Energy Outlook (WEO) by highlighting the clear need for the increased blending of biofuels in global transport fuels illustrated by the WEO’s projections. The WEO’s projections are based on models using existing and officially announced national energy policies around the world, and reaffirms past projections that found global energy demand would rise by 30% to 2040.

The 2017 WEO was released while final negotiations are underway at COP23 where world leaders are attempting to establish a framework for climate action to achieve the objectives included in the 2016 Paris Agreement. Those negotiations have been challenged by faster-than-anticipated global temperature rise and continued growth in global energy demand.

“The WEO’s projections of current and announced national energy policies illustrates clearly that far more aggressive, and immediate, action must be taken to mitigate GHG emissions to achieve the targets laid out in the Paris Agreement” Baker said. “With the transportation sector being a major driver of global energy demand growth, world leaders must embrace biofuels as a key policy solution to reduce GHG emissions” Baker added.

The WEO’s main case, the “New Policies” scenario, bases its projections on the policy commitments enshrined in the Paris Agreement by its signatory countries. This scenario projects continued carbon emission growth to 2040, demonstrating a clear need for enhanced policy action to further reduce projected emissions.

“In 2014 alone, global ethanol production and use reduced GHG emissions in the global transport sector by 169 million tonnes CO2 equivalent” Baker noted. “As the only commercially viable, drop-in ready alternative to conventional transport fuel that can immediately reduce GHG emissions and mitigate future increases, biofuels represent the perfect solution to the immediate challenges facing global policy makers” he concluded.

The Global Renewable Fuels Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting biofuel friendly policies internationally. Alliance members represent over 90% of global biofuels productions. Through the development of new technologies and best practices, Alliance members are committed to producing renewable fuels with the smallest possible footprint.
