About the GHGenius Model
The study utilized a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model called GHGenius, a lifecycle analysis model for energy systems developed for Natural Resources Canada. GHGenius is capable of analyzing the emissions of many contaminants associated with the production and use of traditional and alternative transportation fuels and is used widely to estimate life cycle emissions from combustion sources. The model is capable of predicting emissions for past, present and future years through to 2050 using historical data or correlations for changes in energy and process parameters within that timeframe.
Additional Information About the Data Used
Information on global biofuel production in this report was obtained from F.O. Lichts, an Agra Informa company that provides global information for a number of agricultural and energy sectors including the fuel ethanol and biodiesel sectors.
The quantity of GHG emissions avoided by biofuels calculated in the report is a function of the carbon intensity of the petroleum products produced and the carbon intensity of the biofuels that are used to displace those products.
The global GHG emission reductions resulting from the production and use of biofuels is simply the product of the quantity of biofuels produced times the emission reduction per litre of biofuel.-30-
